2017 Milne Award

The fourth Milne Innovation Award was presented to Thomas N. Robb, professor emeritus, Kyoto Sangyo University, Kyoto Japan, at the Fourth Extensive Reading World Congress at Toyo Gakuen University, Tokyo, Japan August 4-7, 2017.

Robb is a founding member of the Extensive Reading Foundation and is currently the Chair of the organization. He is best know for creating the on-line MReader ER book quiz center accesses by nearly 3,000,000 people a year and used for over 1,000,000 quizzes each year. He is also a tireless promoter for ER and has done workshops on the topic in Korea, Japan (add other relevant countries) and has been a Language Specialist for the US Dept. of State promoting ER in Vietnam and Indonesia.

Of the award, Robb said, “Is a hint that I’ve got to stop?”

Over 360 people participated in the conference which included over 200 presentations and workshops. Among the featured and plenary speakers were Shuhei Kaota of Kwansei Gakuin University, Nishinonmiya, Japan, Richard Day, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, LOH Chin Ee, Nanyang Institute of Education, Singapore, Jennifer Bassett, a former series editor for Oxford University Press and Philip Prowse, the founding editor of Cambridge (University Press) English Readers.
