American Center in Ho Chi Minh City gets Readers

In an ambitious project, the ERF applied for and received a grant from the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to furnish the American Center there with books for extensive reading. While many of the books are ‘official’ graded readers, others, such as the “Who is/was” series are books written for English-speaking youth.

The project team, consisting of two local teachers, Ho Thi Xuan Vuong (HCMC University of Education) and Lu Van Tuan (HoaSen University), and Tom Robb (ERF Chair) have been conducting a range of activities including weekly advisor sessions at the American Center, special advertised lectures and installation of our MReader quiz program for Center patrons. Additional activities include speed reading contests using the readers, discussion groups and the temporary loan of reader sets to teachers around Vietnam.

Future plans include the placement of similar sets of readers in the “American Hangouts” of university libraries in the region with workshops for the teachers on how to effectively use them in their classes.
