The Graded Reader Giveaway

The Extensive Reading Foundation Language Learner Literature Award 2009

Finalist Evaluation Program

Every year, the Extensive Reading Foundation recognizes the best new works of language learner literature in English. This year, from graded readers published in 2008, the ERF judges will choose three finalist titles in each of 5 categories: Young Learners, and 4 Adolescent & Adult categories—Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate/Advanced.

The ERF will later select one winner in each category, taking into account the votes and comments of students and teachers of English worldwide.

To encourage teachers and students to read and evaluate the books, the ERF, in cooperation with publishers, has a Finalist Evaluation Program. In each category, two copies each of the three finalist titles are placed in the hands of 10 classes around the world.  Successful applicants will receive the books soon after the finalists have been announced at the beginning of April 2009.

You may apply for consideration if:

   1. Your class, school or library has an extensive reading program in place to which the supplied titles can be added.
   2. Students can read, evaluate and vote for the books by the July 10 deadline.

In a departure from previous years where teachers, individuals or groups of students cast a single vote per category, this year we will ask for a separate evaluation (on a scale of 1 to 5) and comment on each book read.

To apply, send your request to giveaway@erfoundation.org with a brief description of your class, the number of students and their general reading level. Include your shipping address and contact telephone number. If you apply for more than one category, indicate your first and second choice. In the event that more than 10 teachers apply in one category, the ERF will select for balance of country and geographical area. Preliminary decisions will be based on requests received by February 20, 2009 but requests after that date will be honored for categories that have fewer than 10 applicants.

The finalist books will be announced on the ERF website in early April, in tandem with their announcement at the IATEFL Conference in Cardiff. Polling will take place on this website once the finalists have been announced.
